The short answer

Which Study Island alternative fits your school

The best Study Island alternative for a school that already has test prep is one that shows why a student missed the standard. Study Island reports the standard and the score. Coeducate records the broken step in writing, for math and reading comprehension in grades 3 and up, from $89 a month. Most schools add it next to Study Island for the intervention block instead of replacing it.

Coeducate is not affiliated with Edmentum. Study Island is named here because schools compare against it, and the table below says where it is the better product.

01 What a practice score misses

Why schools look for programs like Study Island

Study Island is built for one job and does it well: standards-aligned practice and test prep in math, ELA, science and social studies, with state editions and benchmark assessments. Edmentum says students can show growth in about 30 minutes a week. For rehearsing the format of a state test, that is useful.

The trouble starts with the students who keep missing the same standard. The questions we hear from math leads and interventionists come back to four things.

A score without a reason

40 percent on a proportions standard looks the same whether the student inverted the ratio, misread the table or guessed.

Picking, not working

On multiple-choice items a student can land on the right option without the setup. The work is where the misconception lives.

More of the same practice

Reassigning the standard gives the student ten more items on the step they already get wrong, with no one aimed at that step.

A package that keeps growing

Districts often buy Study Island inside a larger Edmentum bundle, so the practice line is hard to price on its own.

02 Comparison

Study Island vs Coeducate for schools, compared honestly

Study Island details come from Edmentum's product page and the College Station ISD board memo of June 5, 2024. Study Island wins several rows, and we say so.

Best for

Study Island
Test format rehearsal and broad standards practice
Coeducate
Students who keep missing the same math or reading standard

Read the table as two tools with different jobs. If the honest goal is "students are ready for the format of the state test in four subjects", Study Island does that and we do not. If the goal is "the twelve students who failed the proportions standard twice stop failing it", a score per standard will not get you there, and that is where Coeducate earns its line in the budget.

03 Your options

Three kinds of programs like Study Island

This is a category guide, not a vendor ranking. Prices change every year, so ask each vendor for a written quote and compare it per student, with training and platform fees included.

01

Standards practice and test prep platforms

Item banks mapped to your state standards, practice tests and benchmarks. The closest swap if Study Island mainly runs test prep for you. Check the state edition and the item formats against your actual test.

02

Adaptive learning paths

A diagnostic places each student and the software assigns lessons along a path. Good for broad gap filling across many skills. Usually priced per student and often sold next to a screener.

03

Tutors that coach on the student's work

The student types the steps or the reasoning, and the tutor responds to the step that broke. The record names the skill. This is where Coeducate sits, and it works next to either of the first two.

Schools comparing the second kind usually also look at the IXL alternative for schools and the i-Ready alternative for schools pages, which use the same honest table format.

04 Example output

One grade 7 proportions answer, one named step

The problem (example)

A recipe uses 3 cups of flour for every 4 cups of milk. How many cups of flour go with 10 cups of milk?

The student wrote

"4/3 = x/10, so 3x = 40 and x = 13.3 cups of flour."

On a practice item this is one more wrong answer on the proportional relationships standard. The card shows what the score cannot: the student cross-multiplies correctly but sets up the ratio upside down. The reteach is labeling the two quantities, not another ten proportions.

Session evidence card, grade 7 ratios and proportional relationships

Fixed example

Diagnosis

Sets up the proportion with the ratio inverted

The student writes milk over flour on the left and flour over milk on the right. The cross-multiplication that follows is correct, so the error is in the setup, not the arithmetic.

Teacher note

The arithmetic is fine, so extra computation practice will not help. Every proportion item will keep failing until the student labels units before writing the fraction.

Reteach in 5 minutes

Label before you set up

  1. Write the two quantity names above each ratio before any numbers.
  2. Fill the first ratio from the problem and copy the same order into the second.
  3. Estimate first, then check the answer against the estimate.

05 How it runs

How schools run it next to Study Island

  1. 1

Pull the standards students keep missing

Use Study Island's standards report to list the students below mastery on the same standard after two rounds of practice.

  2. 2

    Assign those skills in Coeducate

During the intervention block, students work three to five problems on that standard and type their steps. The tutor coaches the step that breaks.

  3. 3

Read the cards before the data meeting

Each student has a card naming the step, so the group is sorted by misconception, not by score band.

  4. 4

    Recheck on the next benchmark

Study Island's next benchmark or practice set shows whether the reteach moved the score. Both tools keep their own job.

The same routine runs as a pull-out group in our Tier 2 math intervention programs setup, and the middle school version is described on the math intervention software for middle school page.

06 Being straight about it

When to keep Study Island and skip us

  • Test format rehearsal is the goal. If students need practice with the item types and timing of your state test, a test prep platform with a state edition does that and we do not.
  • You need science or social studies. Coeducate covers math and reading comprehension only.
  • Your students are in K to 2. Coeducate starts at grade 3 and needs students who can type a step or a sentence.
  • Funding requires an ESSA evidence tier. We have no efficacy study and no evidence tier rating. Spend grant money that depends on one on a program that has it.

07 Who buys it

Built for the people who sign the practice software renewal

Principal with an Edmentum quote

Needs to show what the practice line buys. A card that names the broken step per student answers that better than a usage report.

Math interventionist

Has a list of students below mastery and no time to sit with each one. Wants the misconception before planning the group.

Grade 6 to 8 math team

Teaches from its own problem sets and wants student work read without a weekend of marking.

District curriculum director

Compares per-student cost across buildings. District is $7,740 a year with purchase order billing, and the student privacy page covers the review.

08 FAQ

Questions schools ask when replacing Study Island

Pricing other math renewals on the same budget line? We checked what Study Island costs per student, what IXL costs per student, what i-Ready costs a school and Edgenuity cost for schools from public district documents.

What is better than Study Island?

It depends on the job. For state test prep across four subjects, Study Island is hard to beat and a similar standards practice platform is the closest swap. For finding out why a student keeps missing the same math or reading standard, a tutor that reads the student's work does more. Coeducate does that second job, and most schools keep Study Island for the first.

What are programs like Study Island?

Programs like Study Island fall into three groups: standards practice and test prep platforms with item banks and benchmarks, adaptive learning paths that place students from a diagnostic, and tutors that coach on the student's own work. Coeducate sits in the third group. It covers math and reading comprehension for grades 3 and up and records the step behind each mistake.

How much does Study Island cost?

Edmentum says Study Island starts at $5 per student a year, and anything beyond that is quote only. District packages run much higher: College Station ISD approved $112,916.26 a year for Study Island, Exact Path and Courseware for grades K to 12. Coeducate School is $2,088 a year for up to 600 students, with the price on the pricing page.

Is Study Island free?

No. Edmentum sells Study Island to schools and districts per student, from $5 a year, and there is no free school version. Coeducate has no free plan either, but its price is published: Classroom is $89 a month for up to 60 students and School is $2,088 a year. You can try the Mastery Check on this page before you buy.

Is Study Island still used?

Yes. Edmentum still sells Study Island with state editions for tests such as STAAR, Georgia Milestones, CAASPP, IAR, M-STEP and the New York Regents, plus SAT, ACT and GED prep. Districts still buy it, often bundled with Edmentum's Exact Path and Courseware, as the 2024 College Station ISD board memo shows.

Can Coeducate replace Study Island?

For most schools, no, and we would not suggest it. Coeducate has no state test item bank, no benchmark assessments and no science or social studies. It replaces the part of the week where a student repeats practice on a standard they keep missing, and it tells the teacher which step breaks. Run it next to Study Island for that block.

Does Coeducate do state test prep?

Not as a test prep product. Coeducate has no released-item bank, no timed practice tests and no state score predictions. Teachers can paste their own problems or passages, including ones written in the style of the state test, and students get coached on those. If test-format rehearsal is the goal, keep a test prep platform.

Is Coeducate affiliated with Edmentum?

No. Study Island, Exact Path and Courseware are products of Edmentum, and Study Island is a trademark of its owner. We name them only because schools compare against them. The Study Island prices on this page come from Edmentum's public product page and a public school board document, not from Edmentum directly.
