03 Unit economics
Human capacity is the ceiling
A tutoring business scales linearly with tutor hours, and margin is squeezed at both ends: tutors want more per hour, families want to pay less. The only structural relief is work that does not need a tutor in the room.
Between-session practice with hints is that work. It does not replace the tutor, it fills the six days when the tutor is not there, and it arrives at the next session with the misconception already named so the paid hour starts at minute zero instead of minute twelve.
The first twelve minutes
Most sessions open with the tutor working out where the student is. When the card from the week's practice is already open, that time goes back into teaching.
The 9pm note
Session notes are unpaid, inconsistent and the first thing to slip. The teacher note is written for you, one sentence, and you edit rather than compose.
Tutor onboarding
A new tutor inherits a student with a per-skill history rather than a paragraph, which shortens the handover from three sessions to one.
The renewal conversation
A parent sees which skills moved and which did not, with the reasoning underneath. Honest reporting including the flat lines earns more renewals than a glowing summary.
04 If you work with minors
The compliance question arrives eventually
Independent tutoring companies often assume student data obligations are a school problem. They are not. The moment you contract with a district, or a parent asks where their child's work goes, the same questions apply and the answers need to already exist.
Student work is not used to train models, not sold and not used for advertising, and records are deletable on request. The student privacy page also lists the attestations we do not hold, which is the part most vendors leave out.
