IXL is a skills practice platform: a large bank of auto-scored questions across math, language arts, science, social studies and Spanish, a diagnostic that places students, and analytics that report a SmartScore per skill. Coeducate is an AI tutor: a student works a problem from the material you already teach, the tutor coaches with hints instead of answers, and the teacher receives a dated, per-skill mastery record with the student's own reasoning quoted. Schools that need practice volume should keep IXL or a program like it. Schools that need to know why a student is wrong, and to prove what changed, need a tutor.

Four reasons schools search for sites similar to IXL

Most schools that type "programs like IXL" are not unhappy with the skill bank. They are unhappy with what happens after the score comes in. The four complaints below come up in almost every conversation we have with a math or ELA department, and only some of them are solved by switching practice platforms.

Be clear about which one is yours before you take a demo. Two of them point to a different practice bank. Two of them point to a different kind of product.

The score says 80, the test says otherwise

A skill reaches proficient on the report and the same skill fails on the unit test. The score measured answers, not understanding.

Students game the score

Guess, check, repeat. Any right-or-wrong system can be climbed without reasoning, and the report cannot tell the two apart.

The work is not your curriculum

The practice items are IXL's. The assignment you set on Tuesday is yours, and nothing reads the answers to that one.

Renewal quotes moved

School and district pricing is quoted by enrollment, so the per-student number can change at renewal and the business office wants an alternative to price against.

Which two are yours?

The same wrong answer, two different reports

Solve 3(x + 4) = 27.

The student wrote

"3x + 4 = 27, so 3x = 23, x = 7.67"

A practice platform marks it wrong, lowers the score, and shows the worked solution. The student reads it, tries the next one, and may or may not have noticed that the 3 never reached the 4.

Coeducate asks one question about the 4, lets the student fix it, and the teacher's card names the misconception: distributes to the first term only. Solving one-step equations is marked secure, because the student did that part correctly. That is the difference between a score and evidence.

How to price an IXL alternative against your renewal quote

IXL does not publish a school or district per-student price; its site sends classrooms to a trial or a quote and schools to a quote. So the comparison has to start from your own renewal figure. Divide it by enrolled students and by subjects covered, and you have a per-student, per-subject number to put next to anything else.

Coeducate is priced per program, not per student, and the prices are public. For a 600-student school, the School plan at $3,480 a year is $5.80 per student for math and reading together. It does not replace the practice bank, so the honest comparison is your quote plus $5.80, against your quote plus a teacher's evenings.

06 Being straight about it

When IXL is the right purchase and we are the wrong one

  • You need practice volume across subjects. Science, social studies, Spanish, or elementary math and ELA at scale. We cover math and reading from grade 3 and supply no items. Keep the practice bank.
  • You need a diagnostic. IXL places students with its Real-Time Diagnostic. We do not screen or place anyone; we document what happens between your screening windows.
  • Your funding requires published efficacy research or a completed audit. IXL publishes research. We have no efficacy study, no SOC 2 report and no signed state DPA today. If procurement requires one before a pilot, we are not ready for you yet.
  • Students cannot yet type a line of working. The tutor reads what the student writes. For early elementary, a click-and-score platform is the better fit.

Who switches part of the IXL budget to a tutor with evidence

Middle school math department

Practice scores looked fine and the benchmark did not. The department keeps practice for homework and runs the intervention block through the tutor, so the reteach targets a named step.

MTSS or intervention coordinator

Needs a dated, per-skill record with evidence for the eight-week meeting, not a usage report. The cards are that record, written from the sessions already happening.

Tutoring program director

Bills families or a district for progress and needs proof per student. Every session produces a card the director can show, which is why the online tutoring platform page is written for them.

What is better than IXL?

Nothing is better than IXL at what IXL does: a large bank of auto-scored practice skills across math, language arts, science, social studies and Spanish, with a diagnostic and standards-aligned skill plans. A different product is better when the job is different. If you need to know why a student got a problem wrong and what to reteach, a tutor that reads the student's own working, such as Coeducate, answers that question and a skill bank does not.

Is Khan Academy better than IXL?

Khan Academy is free and built around video lessons and mastery practice, so for a school with no budget it is the obvious first choice. IXL has a wider skill bank, a built-in diagnostic and teacher analytics that Khan Academy does not match, and it costs money. Neither one records why a student was wrong on a specific typed answer. What are the best IXL alternatives for schools?

It depends on which part of IXL you are replacing. For adaptive practice with a diagnostic, look at other adaptive practice platforms and compare their per-student site licenses. For a free option, Khan Academy. For an AI tutor that coaches a student through your own assignments and hands the teacher a per-skill mastery record with the student's reasoning quoted, Coeducate, from $89 per month. Is there a program similar to IXL that explains mistakes?

Yes, but it is a different category. Practice programs similar to IXL score the answer and adjust difficulty. How much does IXL cost for schools?

IXL publishes prices only for family memberships. What is a good IXL alternative for math?

For daily math practice, another adaptive practice platform is the like-for-like swap. For the math intervention block, where the question is which step a student got wrong and why, Coeducate's AI math tutor reads the typed working, coaches with a hint, and returns a per-skill card that names the misconception. Many middle schools run practice software for volume and a tutor for diagnosis.

Why do students dislike IXL?

The most common complaint is the SmartScore, which falls after a wrong answer, so a student close to 100 can lose ground on one slip. IXL documents this as intentional, describes the SmartScore as a mastery measure, and notes that the score recovers after correct answers. It works for many students and frustrates some. A hint-first tutor takes the other approach: a wrong answer is the start of a coaching move, and the record shows what the student learned rather than a score that moved.

Can Coeducate replace IXL?

Only if what you use IXL for is diagnosis and evidence. It cannot replace IXL's practice bank, its diagnostic or its coverage of science, social studies and Spanish, because it has none of those. It replaces the evening a teacher spends working out from a score report which students actually understand the skill, and it is honest about the rest on this page.
