01 Why schools look

Four reasons a school searches for Khanmigo alternatives

Most schools that ask the question are not unhappy with Khan Academy. They have a specific gap, and it is usually one of these.

  • The work is not on Khan Academy

    The intervention group works from your adopted curriculum, a teacher-made packet or a state released item set. A tutor that lives inside another library cannot see that work.

Read it as written. Khanmigo wins on content, on subject breadth, on the writing coach, on the teacher tools, on the audit paperwork and on price above a few hundred students. What the teacher gets from one wrong fraction answer

Maria ran 2/3 of a mile on Monday and 3/4 of a mile on Tuesday. How far did she run in all?

The student wrote

"2/3 + 3/4 = 5/7 of a mile"

The item is on a worksheet, not in an online course, so a library tutor never sees it. In Coeducate the student types the answer, the tutor asks whether 5/7 can be right when each day alone was more than half a mile, and the student rebuilds the sum with a common denominator.

The card names the misconception, adds tops and bottoms, and marks reading the word problem as secure, because the student chose addition correctly. The interventionist reteaches one idea instead of the whole unit.

Problem solving is secure. The gap is what the denominator counts, so a short set on fraction size and common denominators will move this student faster than more word problems.

  1. Shade 2/3 and 3/4 of two same-size bars and ask which pieces can be added.
  2. Cut both bars into twelfths and rewrite the sum as 8/12 + 9/12.
  3. Check that 17/12 is more than one mile, as the estimate said it should be.

When Khanmigo is the right purchase and we are the wrong one

  • You need content. We do not supply a curriculum, courses or videos. If your program has no material of its own, a content platform is the correct purchase.
  • You need many subjects. Science, history, SAT prep, writing feedback and coding are outside what we do. We cover math and reading, grades 3 to 12.
  • You need the lowest price for a large district. Above about a thousand students, per-student pricing from a large nonprofit will beat our District plan.
  • You need a completed audit today. No SOC 2, no ISO 27001, no signed state DPA. If your process requires one before a pilot, we are not ready for you yet.

What is better than Khanmigo?

For a school that has adopted Khan Academy content, very little is better than Khanmigo, because the tutor already knows every exercise the student is on. A different product is better when your students work from your own curriculum and you need to know why each one is wrong. Is Khanmigo worth it?
