Adaptive learning platform
Adaptive learning platform that adapts to your curriculum, not to its own
Classic adaptive courseware adapts inside its own content. If your school teaches its own curriculum, the adaptation happens somewhere you cannot see and the evidence comes back in somebody else's standards.
01 Two meanings of adaptive
Adapting the path, or adapting the help
Traditional adaptive courseware adapts the path: it decides which unit you see next inside its own scope and sequence. That works well if you have adopted its curriculum wholesale, and it works badly if you have not, because the path it is optimizing is not the one your teachers are on.
Coeducate adapts the help: the depth of the hint, the vocabulary, the number of steps before the next prompt, and which skill the session is actually about. The path stays yours, which is the only way the evidence comes back in your standards.
Path adaptation
- Chooses the next unit from a fixed library
- Reports progress against its own sequence
- Strongest when you adopt the whole curriculum
- Usually a multi-year procurement
Help adaptation
- Chooses the next hint from the student's own reasoning
- Reports mastery against the skills you name
- Works over the material you already teach
- Starts with one classroom
Neither is wrong. They answer different questions, and a school with an existing curriculum usually needs the second. The category differences are laid out in the comparison.
02 What actually adapts
Five dials, moved by the student's own reasoning
Hint depth
A student who is one nudge away gets a narrower question. A student who has the wrong model gets taken back a step first.
Vocabulary
The same misconception is described differently to a grade 4 and a grade 11 student. The skill name in the teacher record stays constant.
Step size
How much reasoning the student is asked to hold at once, adjusted by how the previous exchange went rather than by a level setting.
Skill focus
A session about ratios that reveals a place-value problem follows the place-value problem, because that is the thing blocking the ratio.
Mode
Socratic by default. A student who has genuinely exhausted the hints and has no adult available can be given a full worked explanation, and the card records that this happened.
Stopping point
A student who has demonstrated the skill twice is not asked a third time. Extension rather than repetition.
03 The visibility problem
Adaptation you cannot inspect is a black box
The recurring complaint about adaptive systems is not that they adapt badly. It is that a teacher cannot see why a student was routed where they were, so the system's picture of the child and the teacher's picture of the child slowly diverge and neither can be reconciled.
Every adaptation here is visible in the evidence card: what the student wrote, what was diagnosed, what was asked next, and which skill moved as a result. A teacher who disagrees can say so, and the override is recorded.

Fixed exampleDiagnosis
Treats evaporation as the water ceasing to exist
The student describes the water as gone and taken by the sun. The vocabulary is confident, so the gap is conceptual rather than linguistic: there is no model of the water going somewhere.
Next tutoring move / hint only
If we put a lid on the puddle, would the water still leave? Where would it be able to go?
Skill mastery read
Observing and describing change
SecureAccurately describes what happened to the puddle over the day.
Conservation of matter
Not yetSays the water disappears and there is nothing left.
States of matter and change of state
Not yetNo mention of the water becoming a gas or entering the air.
Using cause and effect language
DevelopingLinks the sun to the change but only as a cause of disappearance.
Teacher note
Observes and describes change accurately but has no conservation model, so any explanation involving matter changing state rather than ceasing to exist will fail.
Reteach in 5 minutes
Where did it go, not did it go
- Put a small amount of water in a sealed jar and mark the level.
- Leave it in the sun beside an open dish with the same amount.
- Return after an hour and ask where the water in each one is now.
04 For the person who signs off
Two things a curriculum director asks first
Evidence you can present
Per-skill mastery per student, exportable, with the student's own reasoning attached. It survives a board slide and an MTSS meeting because the wording came from the student, not from a summary.
A privacy posture built for minors
Student work is not used to train models. No advertising, no data resale, deletable on request. Designed around FERPA and COPPA obligations, and our security page states plainly which formal attestations we do and do not hold.
Rollout, procurement and the full sign-off checklist are on the pricing page, alongside the cost-per-student estimator.
05 Comparison
Where the categories actually differ
Category-level differences, not vendor claims. Where a category's answer depends on the specific plan or contract, this table says so instead of guessing. Coeducate is not affiliated with any product named here.
