Short answer: Accelerated Reader costs about $7.70 to $8.16 per student a year in recent district quotes, plus a flat $750 a year per school for Renaissance's platform. A 400-student elementary school therefore pays roughly $4,000 a year, about $10 per student all in. Small schools pay more per head because the $750 does not shrink: a 160-student school paid $12.39 per student in 2023.

Renaissance does not print a price anywhere on its Accelerated Reader page. It offers a demo, a chat window and a sales email. What is public is the paper trail: quotes attached to board agendas, purchase-order reports and signed agreements. Every figure below comes from one of those, linked and read in October 2026. Coeducate is not affiliated with Renaissance. We sell a different kind of reading product, and the section near the end says plainly where Accelerated Reader is the better purchase.

How much does Accelerated Reader cost per student?

Every recent quote we read builds the price the same way: one per-student line called "Accelerated Reader Subscription", one "Annual All Product Renaissance Platform" line at $750 per school site, and a $0 "Smart Start" training line. The per-student rate has climbed steadily, about 2.7 percent a year.

Quote year District Accelerated Reader, per student Seats on the line
2021-22Gridley Unified, CA (Wilson Elementary)$7.35600
2023-24Field Community Consolidated SD 3, IL$7.70160
2023-24Campbell County SD 1, WY (Hillcrest Elementary)$7.70 list, $5.70 after discount420
2024-25Los Nietos SD, CA$7.93780 across four schools
2025-26Kimberly SD 414, ID$8.16755 across two schools

Expect a 2026-27 quote near $8.40 per student if the pattern holds. Gridley's terms say renewals are priced at "then-current pricing", so the rate is not locked unless you negotiate a multi-year term.

What districts actually paid for Accelerated Reader

Most of these are full quotes with line items. Where a board document prints only a total, the last column says so.

Document and date What was bought Total What it works out to
Field CCSD 3, IL, quote signed July 2023 Accelerated Reader, 160 students, one school, plus platform $1,982 $7.70 license, $12.39 per student with the platform fee
Campbell County SD 1, WY, Hillcrest Elementary quote, May 2023 Accelerated Reader, myON and myON News for 420 students, plus platform $9,450 after a $3,213 discount on $12,663 Accelerated Reader $5.70 net, all three products $22.50 per student
Los Nietos SD, CA, quote June 2024 Accelerated Reader at four schools, Star Comprehensive Suite, myON, platform at four sites $60,174 board item $7.93 license; a 263-student school pays $10.78 per student with its platform fee
Antioch Unified, CA, purchase-order report, January 2024 Accelerated Reader subscription, Belshaw Elementary, paid from Title I $4,284.60 No seat count printed
Kimberly SD 414, ID, quote for 2025-26 Accelerated Reader for 755 students at two schools, Star Reading at four, platform at four sites $17,460 $8.16 license, $10.16 with platform, $15.62 with Star Reading added
Aztec Municipal SD, NM, July 2026 expenditures Accelerated Reader at McCoy Elementary; platform fee; Star Math $2,452.50 for Accelerated Reader, $806.79 platform Platform fee shown with New Mexico gross receipts tax added
Polk County Public Schools, FL, three-year quote signed April 2024 Accelerated Reader K-8 for 66,000, Star Reading for 45,000, Freckle Math for 44,500, services $2,476,800 over three years About $825,600 a year for the bundle; no separate Accelerated Reader price
San Diego Unified, CA, agreement April 2025 to April 2028 Accelerated Reader and Freckle Not to exceed $99,000 No seat count printed

Discounts are negotiated one deal at a time. Hillcrest got 25 percent off its whole quote in 2023, including the platform fee. Kimberly and Los Nietos show no discount at all. Nothing in these documents suggests a standard multi-year price break, so ask for one explicitly.

Accelerated Reader program cost for a whole school, with the platform fee

The $750 platform fee is charged once per school site, not per product, so it hits small schools hardest. At the 2025-26 rate of $8.16 per student, the all-in cost for one school looks like this.

Students Accelerated Reader licenses Plus $750 platform Per student, all in
150$1,224$1,974$13.16
300$2,448$3,198$10.66
400$3,264$4,014$10.04
500$4,080$4,830$9.66
800$6,528$7,278$9.10

If the school already pays the platform fee for Star, the Accelerated Reader add-on costs only the per-student line. That is why Renaissance quotes often look cheaper as bundles: the $750 is spread across more products.

Accelerated Reader subscription cost with Star Reading and myON

Most schools that run Accelerated Reader also screen with Star. The same quotes give the add-on prices.

  • Star Reading: $5.10 per student in 2021 (Gridley) and $5.46 in 2025 (Kimberly).
  • Star Comprehensive Suite: $15.49 per student in 2024 (Los Nietos).
  • myON digital library: $15.75 per student in 2023 (Campbell County) and $16.22 in 2024 (Los Nietos).
  • myON News: $4.20 per student in 2023 (Campbell County).

So Accelerated Reader with Star Reading runs about $13.60 per student a year at 2025 rates before the platform fee, and adding myON roughly doubles it. California's Department of Education also lists Star at $7.50 per student in a December 2024 screener document, which we saw only in a search summary.

Old Accelerated Reader prices you will still see quoted

Several cost sites still repeat "$4 per student plus a one-time $1,599 school fee". That figure comes from a What Works Clearinghouse report published in October 2008. The 2016 WWC intervention report stopped printing a number and says only that Accelerated Reader is sold as an annual per-student subscription. The one-time fee survives in a 2020 Gulfport, Mississippi quote, where it was discounted to zero. Budget from the 2024 to 2026 quotes, not from the 2008 figure.

The quiz store is also gone. Since June 2015 every quiz comes with the hosted subscription, and Renaissance now advertises more than 220,000 quizzes in English and Spanish. You no longer buy quizzes title by title.

Questions to ask before you renew an Accelerated Reader quote

  1. How many sites carry the platform fee? Each school is a site. Merging a small annex into its main campus record can save $750 a year.
  2. What is the student capacity, and what happens above it? Renaissance's help pages say going over capacity does not lock students out but can change the next invoice. Count enrollment before you sign.
  3. Will you hold this rate for two or three years? Without a written term, renewals are priced at then-current pricing, which has risen every year we can see.
  4. Is the discount on the whole quote or one line? Hillcrest's 25 percent covered the platform fee too. Ask for the same.
  5. Which funding source pays? Antioch paid from Title I. If yours will too, make sure the quote names the eligible school.

Business offices handling Renaissance renewals for several schools end up with a stack of per-site quotes and invoices that never total the same way twice. A tool that can extract the line items from each site's invoice into one sheet makes the reconciliation against the board-approved amount far quicker.

Where Accelerated Reader is the better purchase, and where Coeducate fits

Accelerated Reader does one job well and cheaply: it confirms that a student read a particular book and lets a school run an independent reading program around that, with levels, points and a quiz for almost any title in the library. At about $10 per student all in, nothing we sell replaces it, and we would not suggest trying.

What a passed or failed book quiz cannot tell you is why. A student who scores 40 percent on a quiz may not have finished the book, may have finished it and missed every inference, or may have stalled on vocabulary. That is the gap Coeducate fills. Students answer questions on a passage the teacher chose, the AI reading tutor coaches with a question instead of the answer, and the teacher gets a card naming the comprehension skill that failed with the student's own sentence as evidence. The reading comprehension intervention programs page shows how that runs in a Tier 2 block.

Coeducate's prices are on the pricing page: $89 a month for one teacher and up to 60 students, or $3,480 a year for a school of 10 educators and 600 students, about $5.80 per student. For the other reading programs in the same budget, see our articles on Lexia Core 5 cost, Istation cost and Read 180 cost.

Frequently asked questions

How much does Accelerated Reader cost per student?

About $8 per student a year. District quotes show $7.70 in 2023, $7.93 in 2024 and $8.16 in 2025, plus a $750 platform fee per school. With that fee included, a typical 400-student school pays about $10 per student a year.

How much does Accelerated Reader cost for one classroom?

Renaissance does not sell Accelerated Reader by the classroom. The smallest order we found was 160 students, and every order carries the $750 site fee, so a single class of 30 would pay roughly $995 a year, over $33 per student. The $250 classroom licenses Renaissance sells apply to Freckle and Lalilo, not Accelerated Reader.

Is Accelerated Reader free?

No. Schools pay an annual per-student subscription plus the platform fee. Students and families do not pay separately, and many schools fund it from Title I or library budgets.

Does AR 360 cost more than AR Enterprise?

We found no public figure for the difference. The 2023 to 2026 quotes we read list a single "Accelerated Reader Subscription" line, and one 2023 quote calls it "AR Enterprise Real Time". Ask your rep which version the line includes.

Is Accelerated Reader worth the cost?

For running an independent reading program with a quiz for nearly every library book, yes, at about $10 per student it is inexpensive. It is not a diagnostic: a book quiz score does not tell a teacher which comprehension skill is weak, which is the job a comprehension tutor or intervention program does.
