AI tutoring platform and AI tutoring software that shows what each student got wrong

Students work problems from your own lessons with an AI tutor that gives hints, not answers. Every session ends with a dated evidence card your teachers and tutors can act on the next morning.

The short answer

Buy the AI tutoring platform for the evidence it leaves behind

An AI tutoring platform gives each student a tutor that responds to their work in real time, and gives the adults a record of what happened. Most platforms do the first part well. Where they differ is the record: a usage chart, a chat log, a practice score, or a statement of which skill a student is missing and why.

Coeducate is AI tutoring software for grades 3 to 12 in math and reading comprehension. The student works an item you chose, the tutor asks the next question instead of giving the answer, and the session closes with an evidence card naming the skill, quoting the student and suggesting a reteach. That card is what a teacher, an interventionist or a tutor uses to plan the next group.

01 What is on the market

Four kinds of AI tutoring platform, built for different jobs

Vendors use the same words for very different products. Sort them by what the student actually does, and the shortlist gets short quickly.

  1. Kind 1

    Chat tutor on a course

A student asks questions inside a publisher's lessons. Good for open help on that course. Khanmigo is the best-known example.

  2. Kind 2

    Teacher-built AI spaces

Teachers create AI activities or chat rooms for their class. Flexible, and only as good as what each teacher builds.

  3. Kind 3

    Adaptive practice with AI

An item bank adjusts difficulty and adds hints. Strong for practice volume. The score says right or wrong, not why.

  4. Kind 4

    Tutor on your own work

The student works the problem you assigned and explains it. The output is a per-skill diagnosis. This is what Coeducate does.

02 Side by side

AI tutoring companies compared on price and on what the teacher gets

Prices are the published or documented school prices from our sourced articles. Where a vendor publishes nothing, we say so instead of guessing. We are not affiliated with any of them.

IXL

Practices adaptive skill items, scored by SmartScore

Content: IXL item bank. Price: By quote, district quotes show $9.50 to $24.50 per student.

A SmartScore and time per skill

The sources and dates behind each price are in our articles on Khanmigo cost, SchoolAI pricing, MagicSchool Enterprise pricing and IXL cost per student. Where another product wins a row, it wins it. Khan Academy's course library is far larger than anything we offer, and IXL produces more practice volume per minute. If those are what you are buying, buy them.

03 Before the demo

Seven checks for any AI tutoring software

Ask every vendor the same seven questions and write the answers in one table. The differences show up fast.

  1. 1

Does it give answers or ask questions?

Paste a real student mistake into the demo. If the tutor fixes it for the student, it is a homework helper, not a tutor.

  2. 2

Does it work on our curriculum?

A platform that only tutors its own content cannot support the unit your teachers are teaching this week.

  3. 3

What does the teacher see the next day?

Ask for a sample report. A minutes chart and a chat log take time to read. A named skill and a suggested reteach do not.

  4. 4

What is the price per student at our size?

Get the number for your real enrollment, the year two price and what happens at renewal, in writing.

  5. 5

Is student work used to train models?

The answer should be no, and it should be in the contract, not only on a web page.

  6. 6

    Can we export everything?

If the only output is a dashboard, the evidence leaves when the contract does. Ask for CSV.

  7. 7

    What will it not do?

A vendor that cannot answer this has not thought about where its product fails. Ours does not teach phonics, read handwriting or grade tests.

04 What the platform leaves behind

One grade 7 session and the card it produced

The item

Solve 3(x - 4) = 18 and explain each step.

What the student typed

"3x - 4 = 18, so 3x = 22 and x = 22/3."

A practice score would mark this wrong and move on. The card says the student distributes to the first term only, which is a different reteach from a student who cannot undo multiplication. Multiply that by a class and the teacher has tomorrow's groups. For intervention blocks, see the math intervention software for middle school page.

Fixed example

Diagnosis

Distributes to the first term only

The student rewrote 3(x - 4) as 3x - 4 and solved correctly from there. When asked what 3 times 4 would be inside the brackets, the student said the 3 only goes with the x. The inverse operations are secure. The distributive property is not.

Next tutoring move / hint only

Draw three boxes, each holding x - 4. How many x's are there in total, and how many 4's are taken away?

Reteach in 5 minutes

Every term in the bracket

  1. Model 3(x - 4) as three groups of x - 4 and count both parts.
  2. Have the student expand two more brackets and say what the outside number multiplies.
  3. Rerun the original item and ask the student to check the answer by substitution.

05 Who buys it

One AI tutoring platform for a school, a district or a tutoring company

The tutor is the same on every plan. What changes is how many students and adults it covers, and how the evidence is grouped and billed.

School

Up to 600 students and 10 educators, roles and your own material

$2,088 a year

District

Up to 5,000 students, District, School and Coach roles, SIS export, PO billing

$7,740 a year

Tutoring company

Enterprise, up to 15,000 students, roles set per program, SAML sign-in

$14,940 a year

Independent tutor

Classroom plan, one educator and up to 60 students

$89 a month

Tutoring companies that sell sessions to families should also read the online tutoring platform page, which covers parent reporting between sessions. Annual prices are half the monthly rate. Full terms are on the AI tutor for schools pricing page.

06 Honest limits

When our AI tutoring platform is the wrong purchase

Better to hear it here than after the invoice.

  • You need early reading and phonics. The tutor works on typed answers from grade 3 up. A K to 2 decoding program is a different product.
  • You want a full course library. We tutor the items your teachers pick. If you need ready-made lessons for every standard, a course platform fits better.
  • You need a signed state DPA on day one. We have not yet signed a state data privacy agreement. Enterprise includes DPA review, which is where that starts.
  • Nobody will read the cards. The research is clear that AI tutoring works when an adult assigns it and acts on it. Without that, buy nothing yet.

07 FAQ

Questions buyers ask about AI tutoring platforms

Planning a trial first? The AI pilot programs for schools page gives an eight-week plan with pass marks, and the Khanmigo alternative page compares the two products row by row.

What is the best AI tutoring platform for schools?

The best AI tutoring platform is the one that matches the job you are buying it for. If students need a chat tutor on a publisher's course, Khanmigo fits. If teachers want to build their own AI activities, SchoolAI or MagicSchool fit. If you need written, per-skill evidence of what each student got wrong on your own assignments, that is what Coeducate is built for.

How much does an AI tutoring platform cost?

Published school prices are rare. Khanmigo lists $10 per student a year for up to 1,000 licenses. MagicSchool and SchoolAI quote schools privately. Coeducate publishes its price: $89 a month for one teacher and up to 60 students, or $2,088 a year for a School plan covering up to 600 students, about $3.48 per student.

Is AI tutoring effective?

It can be, under the right conditions. A 2025 Harvard randomized study in Scientific Reports found students learned more than twice as much in less time with a carefully designed AI tutor than in an active-learning class. The condition that matters most in schools is use: students engage when a teacher assigns the work and reads the results.

Can AI replace human tutors?

Not for the students who need the most help. AI tutoring adds practice time with feedback and tells the teacher where each student is stuck, which makes the adult's time with a small group more targeted. The strongest evidence so far supports AI working alongside tutors and teachers, as in the Stanford Tutor CoPilot trial, rather than replacing them.

Which AI tutoring companies sell to schools?

The main AI tutoring companies selling to US schools include Khan Academy (Khanmigo), SchoolAI, MagicSchool, Varsity Tutors with its Live plus AI product for districts, and adaptive practice vendors such as IXL and Curriculum Associates that add AI features. Coeducate sells an AI tutor that works your own assignments and records per-skill evidence.

Is AI tutoring safe for students?

It is safe when the platform is set up for school use and you check the data terms before any student logs in. Ask whether student work trains the vendor's models, what is stored and for how long, who can see the chats and how deletion works. Coeducate never uses student work to train models, and the security page sets out what is stored.

Can a tutoring company use an AI tutoring platform with its own students?

Yes. A single tutor can run the Classroom plan for up to 60 students, a center can run the School plan with up to 10 educators, and a tutoring company with several programs can use Enterprise, where roles are set per program. Between sessions, students work problems with hints, and the tutor opens the next session with the evidence card.

What grades and subjects does Coeducate tutor?

Coeducate tutors grades 3 to 12 in math and reading comprehension, on problems and passages the teacher picks. It coaches with hints instead of answers and ends each session with an evidence card. It does not teach phonics or decoding, read handwriting, plan lessons or grade tests.
