AI tutoring for students with an AI tutor for elementary, middle and high school students
Students get a tutor that asks the next question instead of writing the answer. You get a per-skill record of every session, so you can see who is stuck and why.

01 The short answer
What AI tutoring for students should do in a school
Good AI tutoring for students coaches instead of answering, works on the assignment the class is already doing, and lets the teacher see every session. Coeducate does all three for grades 3 to 12 in math and reading comprehension: the student explains their thinking, the tutor responds with a hint or a question, and the teacher gets a card naming the idea that broke, in the student's own words.
The reason the teacher view matters: students left alone with an AI tutor often stop using it or use it to get answers. Assigned and checked by an adult, the same tool becomes extra practice time with a record behind it.

What the student sees and what the teacher sees
A grade 7 student on a ratio problem. On the left, the conversation as the student had it. On the right, what lands in the teacher's report when the session ends.
Student screen
- Problem. A recipe uses 3 cups of flour for 2 cups of milk. How much milk for 9 cups of flour?
- Student. 8 cups, because 9 is 6 more than 3, so add 6 to 2.
- Tutor. If you used 6 cups of flour, how much milk would keep the taste the same?
- Student. 4? Because it is double.
- Tutor. Doubling worked there. What do you do to 3 to get 9?
- Student. Times 3. So 6 cups of milk.

03 By grade band
An AI tutor for elementary, middle and high school students
Grades 3 to 5
Short sessions on place value, fractions and comprehension of short passages. The tutor uses plain words and one question at a time, and the teacher stays in the room. Below grade 3 we point schools to a teacher-led program.
Grades 6 to 8
Ratios, integers, equations and informational text. This is where the add-instead-of-scale kind of error shows up most, and where a named misconception saves the most reteach time.
Grades 9 to 12
Algebra, functions and argument in nonfiction. Older students are the most tempted to ask a chatbot for the answer, so the tutor asks them to justify each step before it moves on.
04 Four kinds of AI tutoring
The best AI tutor for students depends on who is watching
Most lists of AI tutors mix four different products. They suit different buyers, and only one of them is built for a teacher who has to answer for what the AI did.
| Kind | Gives the answer? | Teacher sees the session? | Best for |
|---|---|---|---|
| Homework solver apps | Yes, usually step by step | No | A student checking their own work at home |
| General chatbots | Yes, unless told not to | No | Adults who know how to prompt for coaching |
| Practice platforms with adaptive questions | Shows the correct answer after a miss | Scores only | Skill drill on the vendor's question bank |
| School AI tutor on your own assignments | Not by default, the teacher decides | Yes, every session per skill | Teachers, interventionists and tutoring programs |
Coeducate is the fourth kind. It does not have a question bank, so if you want hours of adaptive drill with no teacher input, a practice platform fits better.
05 What the research says
Is AI tutoring effective for students
The short version: a well-designed AI tutor can teach well, and students use it far better when an adult assigns it and reads the results.
-
Learning gains
In a randomized study at Harvard, published in Scientific Reports in 2025, college physics students learned more than twice as much in less time with an AI tutor built on teaching principles than in an active-learning class.
-
Engagement
Education Week (August 2026), reporting a Stanford brief, notes that many students do not engage with AI tutors on their own and that the strongest results so far come from tools that keep a human tutor in the loop.
-
What that means for a school
Assign the sessions, read the cards, and use the time saved for the students who need a person. That is the model the high impact tutoring programs page lays out session by session.

Adds the difference instead of scaling
Asked how much milk goes with 9 cups of flour when 3 cups go with 2, the student added 6 to both quantities. After one doubling question the student scaled by 3 correctly. One correct answer after coaching is not mastery yet.
Next tutoring move / hint only
If 3 cups of flour need 2 cups of milk, does 4 cups of flour need 3 cups of milk? Why or why not?

Adding keeps the gap, scaling keeps the taste
- Build a ratio table for 3 to 2 and extend it by doubling and tripling.
- Add 1 to both quantities and ask whether the mix tastes the same.
- Find milk for one cup of flour and use it to answer the 9 cup question.
06 Before you assign it
Six questions to ask any AI tutor app for students
Parents will ask what the AI said to their child. These are the questions that let you answer, with our own answers in the right column, including the ones that are a no.
| Question | Coeducate |
|---|---|
| Does student work train the vendor's AI models? | No |
| Can the teacher read every session? | Yes, with the student's own words |
| Does it hold back final answers? | Yes in the default hint mode, a teacher can allow worked steps per assignment |
| Does it need a student's full name or email? | No, a student is labeled by initials or your own class code |
| Does it hold a SOC 2 report? | No, and we do not claim one |
| Does it cover K to 2 early reading? | No, it starts at grade 3 |
The full data handling answers, and the checklist we suggest before a long contract, are on the student data security and privacy page.

07 Who assigns it
Schools and programs that give students AI tutoring
Classroom teachers
Thirty students, one of you. The tutor takes the first pass on a problem set while you work with the table that needs you, and the cards tell you who to see next.
Interventionists and special educators
You need dated evidence per skill for MTSS meetings and IEP progress notes. Every session writes it without a separate log.
Tutoring programs and after school coordinators
Students get practice on the days the tutor is not there, and the tutor starts each session from what the last one found.
For a single subject, the AI math tutor for schools and the AI reading tutor pages go deeper. If you are comparing district plans, the Khanmigo alternative for schools page puts the two side by side with prices, and math intervention for special education covers the IEP side.
08 Questions
AI tutoring for students and the questions schools ask
What is the best AI tutor for students?
For a student working alone at home, the best AI tutor is one that asks questions instead of handing over answers. For students in a school, add two more tests: it works on the class's own assignments, and the teacher can see what happened in every session. Coeducate is built for that second case, from $89 a month.
Is AI tutoring effective for students?
It can be, under the right conditions. A 2025 Harvard randomized study in Scientific Reports found students learned more than twice as much in less time with a carefully designed AI tutor than in an active-learning class. Education Week's August 2026 review adds the catch: many students do not engage with AI tutors unless an adult assigns and checks the work.
Do AI tutors just give students the answers?
General chatbots and homework apps usually do, which is why teachers distrust them. A tutoring mode should refuse. In its default mode Coeducate coaches with a hint or a question, asks the student to explain the step, and does not write the final answer. A teacher can switch one assignment to a full worked explanation when a student needs it. The teacher can read exactly what was said in each session.
Can AI replace a human tutor?
No. The tutoring research base rests on a consistent human tutor and a relationship, and no software supplies that. What AI does well is add practice time between tutor or teacher sessions and record where each student got stuck, so the adult spends their time on the student who needs it most.
Is AI tutoring safe for students?
It depends on the product and the contract. Ask whether student work trains the vendor's models, whether a teacher can see every conversation, what data is collected, and whether the vendor signs your district's data privacy agreement. Coeducate does not use student work to train models and shows the teacher every session.
How much does AI tutoring cost for a school?
Published district AI tutor plans start around $10 per student a year (Khanmigo's Enterprise Starter), while human tutoring costs $1,200 to $2,500 per student. Coeducate publishes its prices: $888 a year for one teacher and 60 students, $3,480 a year for 600 students.
What is the best AI tutor for elementary students?
Younger students need short sessions, plain language and an adult nearby, so the best choice is a tutor the teacher assigns and checks rather than an open chatbot. Coeducate starts at grade 3 in math and reading comprehension. For grades K to 2, use a teacher-led program; text-heavy AI tutors do not suit early readers.
Is AI tutoring good for students with dyslexia?
For decoding and phonics, no AI tutor replaces a structured literacy program delivered by a trained teacher. Where AI helps is comprehension and math practice, where a student can work at their own pace without being rushed. Coeducate works on comprehension and math, and the teacher can read each answer aloud or adjust the task.
09 For the person who signs off
Two things a curriculum director asks first
Evidence you can present
Per-skill mastery per student, exportable, with the student's own reasoning attached. It survives a board slide and an MTSS meeting because the wording came from the student, not from a summary.
A privacy posture built for minors
Student work is not used to train models. No advertising, no data resale, deletable on request. Designed around FERPA and COPPA obligations, and our security page states plainly which formal attestations we do and do not hold.
Rollout, procurement and the full sign-off checklist are on the pricing page, alongside the cost-per-student estimator.
