The person in the room is not always the subject specialist
A teaching assistant supporting a small group needs to know what each student is stuck on, in language they can use. A substitute covering a subject they do not teach needs a specific target and a script for the next move, not a worksheet and a lost period.
Both get the same artifact the class teacher gets: the named misconception, the next question to ask, and the five-minute activity. That is a considerably better handover than a note on the desk.
